The Hammatt House is Gone

A barrier beach is a tough place to live. In Chatham, a colony of dozens of dune homes survived for decades. Some survived the Blizzard of '78 and the "no-name" (Perfect) storm of 1991 (which demolished the house where I now live).

Last year, there were five surviving homes on Chatham's North Beach.

Two days ago there was one, the Hammatt House.................

Now, it is gone. Kudos to all you folks who, knowing you would lose in the end, battled mother nature and accepted the last wave with dignity!

I captain 4 different boats out of the Mill Wharf Marina in Scituate, Mass.

On Thursday August 27th, 2009, I was captaining a 30 foot Grady White, with Capt. Taylor Sears as the mate, and Bob and Pam Mayo from Dartmouth Mass, and their two children, Elizabeth and Ian Mayo, 10 and 12 years old, as the charter.

We left Scituate harbor and went fishing for bluefin tuna near the SW Corner of Stellwagen Bank, about 17 miles away.

Mid morning we hooked a tuna. Bob Mayo had been fighting it for about 40 minutes when the tuna surfaced, and we all saw a mako attack it. The result is the mako took the back section off the tuna.

I carry a wire shark rig in my bag, but since I have used this boat before I had put one onboard previously. We put out the wire shark rig baited with a piece of the mutilated tuna. The charter agreed to let Taylor be the angler.

The mako took the bait and Taylor did a great job as angler. I explained that since we were using a conventional wire shark rig, and not a wind on leader, that we couldn’t get the mako within 15 feet of the rod tip because the wire section would not come through the rod tip. Also, it would be too dangerous to ask the charter to wire up the mako or try to harpoon it. I had the two children get out of the cockpit and stay forward since makos can jump into the cockpit.

Since I have had lot of experience with makos; and we had no wireman, when Taylor brought the shark in as close as he could, I had Taylor put the rod in the forward holder and grab the harpoon while I swung the boat to get the mako within harpoon range off the stern - with the mako’s head pointing away from us.

I told Taylor to stick it behind the dorsal toward the tail. This greatly reduces the problem of the mako jumping into the cockpit. Also they come back tail first on the handline and are easier to tail wrap.

Taylor made a perfect throw and got the harpoon dart into the rear section of the mako.

The enraged mako bolted way from the boat peeling line off the reel in the rod holder and taking the harpoon dart line and the attached ball right out of the cockpit. The ball bounced along the water and went under.

Taylor resumed fighting the mako on the rod, but later on, the snap swivel from the mono running line to the wire leader broke. The snap swivel didn’t open up; it just snapped off.

Now we have to hope the dart in the mako is well placed, and it was.

We saw the ball on the dart line surface and followed it.

When we would get close with the boat, the mako would dive and take the ball under. Eventually, when I would get the ball alongside, Taylor would get the ball back into the cockpit and get on the handline only to have the mako bolt and pull the ball overboard. This happened several times. Finally, Taylor with the help of Bob and Pam Mayo and myself were able to keep the line in the cockpit and bring in the mako, and tail wrap it.

The mako looked to me to be over 500 lbs but when I saw the male claspers I was somewhat disappointed because it would be rare for a male shortfin mako to exceed 500 lbs. (Some female makos will weigh well over a thousand pounds.)

I called State shark biologist John Chisholm and told him we were bringing in a larger than usual male mako.

Steve James weighed in the mako at 624 lbs-an unheard of weigh for a male mako.

Biologist John Chisholm asked if it could be left intact for biologists to dissect the next morning, because there was a lot of scientific interest in this large male mako.

The charter agreed to this. The fish was iced down and left in a tuna bag overnight.

The next morning, Dr. Greg Skomal and John Chisholm from the State, and 2 Federal biologists, dissected it. Samples were taken and will be distributed to the scientific community.

The Mayo family came back and got their mako steaks as promised.
I missed the necropsy that morning, as I was out fishing .

Former Key West mayor 'Tony' Tarracino dies at 92
The Associated Press

KEY WEST, Fla. -- Anthony "Tony" Tarracino, a former mayor of Key West and legendary bar owner of "Captain Tony's Saloon" whose life was memorialized in a Jimmy Buffett song, has died, according to his wife. He was 92.

Tarracino died Saturday after being hospitalized for about a week with a heart and lung condition, said his wife of 38 years, Marty Tarracino. She and seven of his children were with him, sharing stories in his hospital room shortly before his death, she added.

"He loved Key West and everyone here," she said. "Oftentimes, I've heard him called the conscience of Key West."

He came to Key West from New Jersey in 1948 with $18 in his pocket. Ten years later he purchased a bar on Greene Street and changed its name to Captain Tony's Saloon.

Tarracino was a charter boat captain and raconteur fond of telling colorful stories about the era of the mercenaries of the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, who opposed Fidel Castro's communist Cuban regime. He served as Key West's mayor from 1989 to 1991.

Captain Tony's colorful life included marrying four times and fathering 13 children.

His story was recounted in a film titled "The Cuba Crossing," starring Stewart Whitman as Tarracino and in a book called "Life Lessons of a Legend" that Tarracino did with Brad Manard.

Buffett, a longtime friend, sang about Tarracino's exploits in the song "Last Mango in Paris," from the 1985 album of the same name.

A service was scheduled Saturday morning followed by a reception for family and friends at Captain Tony's Saloon. Although the bar retains the "Captain Tony's" name, Tarracino sold it in 1989.

Who'd a thunk it. The Boston Bruins just squeaked into a Stanley Cup playoff spot facing the #1 team (and best at taking dives) in the League, the Montreal Canadiens. Remarkably coming back from a 3-1 deficit in games, the Bruins won back-to-back games, last night winning 5-4 in the final minutes at the new Bahston Gahdin.

Montreal will have the home-ice advantage and, as always, the best officials their money has bought.

Real nasty storm here with gusts to 60 mph (91mph at Nantucket...ouch) but the tides were in a neap range, winds were northerly (not northeasterly thank you) at peak and, though a near miss, we did not get a direct hit by the storm center. The storm was an extratropical hurricane which morphed into a monster coastal storm with winds approaching cat. 2 hurricane force.

The house was rockin' and rollin' but no damage....and, for the first time, NO LEAKS! The HD rollshutters and all the reinforcements, reflashing, patching and recaulking I've done over the years have finally passed a significant test. So, BRING IT! I'm kidding. Its not nice to taunt mother nature when you are 12 feet from a seawall.

Yet another great concert by Jimmy but 58,000 fans at Gillette Stadium makes me long for the good old days, circa 1984, at Great Woods when tickets for center stage 3rd row were cheap and easy to get. There were no lines for nothin', Fingers Taylor led the Coral Reefers with his harmonica and tailgating was wild west. I blame myself in part. After my first show I told all my friends and colleagues "Hey, you got to see this guy Buffett". Well, seems they all told some friends too.

Remember that scene from Caddyshack where Bishop Bickering was shooting a near perfect game of golf during a thunderstorm?

Well, last week I rowed out to my mooring on a real nice, calm day. Put a chunk of bait on the hook, cast it out and before I could lay down some chum, WHIZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, fish on the line. 28 1/4" Striper (honest, I didn't stretch him). Keeper fish in 30 seconds.

I like 4th of July on Wednesday. We get a whole week celebration instead of just a long weekend.

The whole Marshfield coast, from Humarock to Green Harbor lights up for 2 hours.....

The mighty Rum Balls, with the great Seahawk 200 in tow, took us on a scenic voyage up the North River to Couch Beach.....

We celebrated Sam's 11th birthday in style.....with tunafish and tapioca pudding.....

Caught a 32" striper in the back yard. Shown here with supermodel Danielle.....

.....and got to moon the Goodyear Blimp.

Omnipresent Peyton Manning won the Superbowl. Yippee. Rather, Rex "Butterfingers" Grossman lost it. At least traitor Vinatieri didn't win it on a FG. But he did get roughed up (hee hee hee).

Still, a great season for the Pats. Forming a team for next season will be a challenge.

What an ignoble ending to another great season. The fastest car in the race cannot win if it just runs out of gas. Thats what happened. Age and injuries took their toll. More lamentable than the loss is the prospect of losing some of the great veterans who built the Patriots dynasty. Tedy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison, Richard Seymour among those who gave their all despite injuries that would have us mere mortals on crutches.

This may have been the turning point of the game. All New England feared the Colts would win by a field goal from traitor Adam Vinitieri. Instead, it was a short pass to ex-Patriot Dan Klecko. What a ballbuster.

On to picking up the pieces and rebuilding the team. It won't be easy. And thanks to Skippy for letting me view this debacle on his 50" plasma. Now I'm spoiled.
